Bethlehem OKs beer, wine sales

Bethlehem, population 1,600, was the last dry town in Barrow County until this week when the city council agreed to let stores and restaurants sell beer and wine.

With wine and beer available just across the town border and at every nearby grocery store, Bethlehem residents can easily get beer and wine anyway, the mayor said.

"We have a convenience store now that's 2 feet outside the city limit of Bethlehem that sells beer already," said Mayor Sandy McNab. "Everyone thought that store was in Bethlehem, but it's not. ... We were the only city in the county that didn't sell beer. We figured we're just losing money by not doing it."

Bethlehem City Council voted 3-2 Monday to allow restaurants and stores to sell beer and wine. McNab had to break a tie vote between two pro- and two anti-alcohol sale councilmen.
