Maysville beer, wine vote today
Maysville City Council members will vote on a controversial ordinance today that would allow local restaurants to serve beer and wine.
The council held public hearings on the proposed ordinance last week after local restaurant owners requested they consider allowing beer and wine sales to help their businesses compete with those in surrounding municipalities.
Commerce, Jefferson, Braselton and Hoschton all allow restaurants to serve beer and wine to their customers.
Gary Freeman, a local attorney who co-owns Sarah's restaurant off Main Street in downtown Maysville, said many would-be customers skip the city's five restaurants for dozens of others just 6 miles away at the Tanger Outlet Mall.
"We're just trying to compete with Banks Crossing," said Freeman, who helped restore a downtown building so that he could open a Southern-style restaurant there in 2008. "They're just not letting us compete. Everything around us is wet, and we're in this little enclave."
Not everyone thinks beer and wine sales are a good idea; religious groups and lifelong residents have sharply opposed the proposal.
Some even organized a boycott of downtown stores run by owners who favor the ordinance. Several restaurant owners and at least one city official have reported vandals throwing rocks at their businesses and homes.
"Nobody in a dozen years has ever vandalized these buildings until this came up," Freeman said. "This debate has gotten mean."
